Scoop, Hype, Markets, Database
☕ Good Morning!
Dan Primack, Biz editor at Axios, shared with us their latest scoop: Facebook is buying Giphy for $400m. It seems it will retain its own branding, and will primarily be integrated into Instagram. Giphy has millions of daily users that share billions of GIFs. These generate revenue via branded content. Read the article here.
🚀 Maker Stories
Fred Destin, Founder at Stride VC, shares a great Medium post on the most hyped startup in everybody’s mind, Clubhouse! The company was, founded by Paul Davison and Rohan Seth and is an audio-based social network with currently less than 5,000 beta test users. According to multiple reports, it has just closed a $10m round at a $100m valuation with non-other than Andreessen Horowitz. Fred points out that hype “is a tool for people who invent the future to get other people to believe in them and follow them”. And the result can be very different, “it can turn on you”, “it can be used in dubious ways too” and “it can make people really angry”. Whether Clubhouse succeeds or fails, it will definitely turn out to be a good lesson on how to initiate hype around a startup! Read the full post here.
If you want to learn more about Clubhouse, how it works, and what new founders, Makers, and NoCoders can learn from it, I suggest KP’s excellent essay below. You can read the full text here.
🏗️ Build + Launch
And we’re back to newsletters. Over the weekend, I discovered a great Twitter Thread by Bryan Harris, founder of Growth Tools. He summarises the key stats from TLDR Dan’s successful tech newsletter and looks at five other markets this concept could be transposed into and how to go about building and launching it. Read the full thread here.
🖥️ NoCode
Toby Allen has released another great NoCode project, named Top 50 Slack. It’s a massive database with over 3000 Slack groups, covering 35 different categories, including 732 Tech & Web groups, 56 Remote & Nomad groups, and 16 Ai & ML groups. And all done with Airtable and Carrd. Another brilliant example of NoCode at work. Visit the site here.
💭 Afterthought
And to finish the day, a concise and in my opinion accurate thesis by Jason Calacanis on the future of remote work. As I already mentioned last week, Twitter leads the way, and many will follow... Have a great evening everyone!
