Change, Audience, Oxygen, Repetition
☕ Good Morning!
To kick-off, a poignant article by Tiffani Ashley Bell for Marker on changes needed to dismantle white supremacy in the tech sector and in society. Companies, startups, and VCs all need to do more than “the bare minimum of performative allyship with hashtags and changing social media profile photos.” They need to break up the old way of doing things! If you work or lead in tech, Tiffani lists a number of questions you need to ask yourself and your team about your anti-racist actions. Read the article.
🏗️ Maker News
A great presentation by Lenny Rachitsky on how he launched Lenny’s Newsletter 12 months ago on Substack and went paid two months ago. As we hear again and again, you need to begin by building an audience through insightful posts on social media and the occasional in-depth blog post, and where possible leverage influencers to increase your reach. Two such blog posts made up 50% of Lenny’s growth. To deliver consistent value to his audience, Lenny follows three rules: Make sure every post is actionable and concrete, only talk about things one understands and add something new to the conversation. He goes on to explain the next steps he took for his paid launch, including how he deicded on his subscription price. A final important reminder is to continue publishing the occasional valuable free post, so you can grow your paid subscriber base. Watch the video or read the presentation.

To finish, the words below by Tyler Tringas resonate strongly. “White men with privilege (like me) need to get comfortable with the idea of being uncomfortable.” Don’t be silent, engage, learn and speak up. History has proven many times that silence leads to disaster! That’s it for today. Take care of each other and see you tomorrow.
